Overview:
The Privacy Manager must be strong advocate of patient privacy, be highly visible and actively assist leaders and co-workers improve privacy across the organization. The Privacy Manager must recognize how protecting patient privacy complements our Mercy Values and Service Standards.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Business Administration, Risk Management, or other healthcare-related field.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting.
Certifications: Willingness to obtain Certified in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC) through the Health Care Compliance Association within one year of employment.
Other:
Thorough knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH).
Ability to make presentations and address both large and small groups of co-workers regarding privacy education and other privacy-related matters.
Ability to travel regionally and work independently without supervision.
Ability to analyze audit trails and other reports to validate appropriate co-worker access of protected health information.
Must be comfortable working with Human Resources and assisting with investigating and interviewing co-workers.
Preferred Experience: Previous privacy and security, as well as audit experience preferred.
Preferred Certifications: Certified in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC) though the Health Care Compliance Association.
Job Responsibilities:
Investigates, Interviews and applies the Mercy Sanctions Policy when appropriate.
Reviews audit trails, reviews reports, develops report logic to pro-actively monitor Mercy co-workers’ access to protected health information, works closely with Human Resources
1) to arrange interviews of co-workers who may have inappropriately handled protected health information per the Mercy Sanction Policy or other Mercy HIPAA/HITECH policies and
2) determine appropriate sanctions when there is evidence to support that protected health information was inappropriately handled.
Educational Material/Presentations/HIPAA Audit ProtocolDevelops educational material regarding HIPAA/HITECH that the organization needs to know. Attends staff meetings and seeks out other venues throughout the organization to present this education. Serves as a resource to other leaders, meeting one-on-one with co-workers or with large or small groups to advance privacy education throughout Mercy.
Annually reviews the Office for Civil Rights HIPAA Privacy Protocol and assesses the organization’s compliance, develops mitigation to areas in need of improvement and enacts those mitigation recommendation.Other duties as assigned to assist the Compliance Department.
