Summary

Position Summary

Under the direction of the MaineHealth Vice President of Audit and Compliance Services, and the Senior Director of Compliance, the MaineHealth Regional Compliance Officer (RCO) position provides oversight of compliance activities and serves as a compliance, policy and regulatory subject matter expert.

The RCO, working within the MaineHealth integrated corporate compliance team, supports each assigned Local Health Systems to ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures and all applicable federal and state health care laws and regulations. The RCO provides guidance to the assigned Local Health System’s workforce on all manner of compliance related matters; develops and reviews compliance policies and procedures; creates and implements compliance education; identifies potential areas of vulnerability and risk; and develops, implements and monitors corrective action plans to resolve instances of conduct that do not conform to MaineHealth policies or to federal or state laws or regulations. The RCO also performs additional duties as directed in support of other system compliance-related functions.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.

License/Certifications: Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) preferred. If not currently certified, the candidate must become certified within one year of hire.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a healthcare organization. Knowledge of healthcare operations, clinical activities, coding/billing/reimbursement, quality improvement and risk management is desired. In addition, an in-depth knowledge of the state and Federal rules and regulations applicable to healthcare settings is desired.

Knowledge and general understanding of Federal and state compliance program requirements, particularly in relation to hospitals, physician practices, and other healthcare facilities.

Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks and work independently to meet deadlines and exercise sound professional judgment

Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels and with varying backgrounds both within and outside the organization

Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Able to communicate thoughts, ideas, information and messages with clear language, style, organization and format appropriate to the subject matter, purpose and audience.

Possesses excellent critical thinking skills, including the ability to identify a problem, determine the root-cause, communicate findings and participate in the development of the solution.

Strong project management skills including the ability to take a project from conception to post implementation review.

Ability to manage difficult conversations with sensitivity and the ability to respond to confidential information with objectivity and discretion.
