The opportunity
This is a unique opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join QBE’s Group Legal team, reporting directly to the ‘General Counsel – Home Markets’.
In this role you will serve QBE’s Australian-based Group Corporate functions and Auspac functions, providing legal advice and work product, primarily with respect to matters related to employment, privacy, and intellectual property.
We are looking for a highly skilled lawyer who has a passion for supporting employers and employees and making the workplace a fair and safe space. You will partner with counterparts, including C-Suit stakeholders, across the organisation to elevate the standard practice globally and manage legal matters related to employment and privacy.
General duties:
Anticipating and identifying legal issues, particularly on employment and privacy opportunities
Providing high quality legal advice that achieves effective and efficient processes and desired outcomes aligned to enterprise strategy
Applying strong technical expertise to continuously improve legal principles based on evolving best practice and industry standards
Employment specific duties:
Partner with Employee Relations to proactively manage and mitigate legal risk in relation to Workplace matters
Advise and guide stakeholders across the business on workplace matters such as interpersonal conflicts, complex performance management issues and involuntary terminations
Continuously advise stakeholders on updated employment laws and support the business to integrate changes in law into current processes and policies
Manage the legal elements of employment related investigations and claims
Privacy specific duties:
Provide guidance and assist in the management of OAIC complaints and privacy-related litigation
Oversee the investigation of known or suspected privacy breaches, ensuring we are mitigating risk and education stakeholders along the way
Educate the business and provide legal advice in relation to the use, acquisition, storage and deletion of date
Provide insight and advice to the organisation as to the impact of privacy related policies and practices
Your story so far
We are looking for a highly experienced and passionate legal professional who can build a foundation of trust with key stakeholders across the Group and AusPac function.
You must have:
Law degree; Australian practising certificate
10-15 + years post admission law experience
Significant corporate experience with expert technical legal skills , particularly in the context of employment or privacy law (experience working in a large ASX listed and/or regulated capital environment would be advantageous)
Ability to build and maintain strong internal and external business relationships
Strong influencing and negotiating skills
Superior analytical and problem solving ability
