About the department
Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) is where new and bold products are built and released within Cloudflare. Rather than being constrained by the structures which make Cloudflare a massively successful business, we are able to leverage them to deliver entirely new tools and products to our customers. Cloudflare’s edge and network make it possible to solve problems at massive scale and efficiency which would be impossible for almost any other organization.
What you'll do
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our team. You will lead a team of passionate, talented engineers that are building innovative products that bring privacy, security and speed to millions of internet users each day. You will play an active part in shaping product strategy based on what’s technically possible. You will make sure our company hits our ambitious goals from an engineering standpoint.
The team you will lead currently works on a next-generation proxy framework written in Rust. The framework is the foundation for mission-critical products at Cloudflare, such as the Zero Trust Gateway and our egress routing service, and for a collection of Privacy proxies that the team develops and operates. There is also collaboration with our research team in, for example, building privacy-preserving measurement and analytics systems based on emerging cryptographic standards.
In this role, you will manage and lead those projects, working directly with internal teams or external partners such as browser and operating system vendors, with a mission to improve the state of privacy and security on the web. You will manage multiple services at scale, ensuring that the team is capable of responding to or preventing incidents in a timely manner, with the right alerts and metrics in place. You will lead the implementation of new feature requests with often competing priorities coming from our internal and external partners alike, while maintaining clear and proactive communication of progress, changes, and blockers to all internal and external stakeholders.
Examples of desirable skills, knowledge, and experience
- Experience leading a team
- Empathetic, proactive, and constructive communication skills, verbal and written
- Experience collaborating with multi-functional and distributed teams
- Excel at planning, and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability
- Solid foundation in computer science and software engineering with strong competencies in software design, building and running distributed systems
- Demonstrate a track record of leading a team including hiring, onboarding, and professional development. You inspire your team to reach higher. You’re as good as explaining “why” as you are “how”
- Experience implementing tools, processes, internal instrumentation, methodologies, and resolving blockages
- Comfortable managing teams/projections with tight deadlines and short release cycles
What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: We equip politically and artistically important organizations and journalists with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers–at no cost.
Athenian Project: We created Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration.
Path Forward Partnership: Since 2016, we have partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit organization, to create 16-week positions for mid-career professionals who want to get back to the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or loved one.
18.104.22.168: We released 22.214.171.124 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use – it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal – we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.
Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
