This is a fantastic opportunity for a seasoned data protection & privacy lawyer to join EY’s ASEAN General Counsel’s Office and be a member of EY’s global data protection (DP) team. 

The ASEAN General Counsel’s Office is dedicated to the provision of world class in-house legal services to the organization’s client-facing professionals in 14 markets across ASEAN.


The opportunity


EY processes significant data flows subject to a myriad of customer and regulatory requirements on a day-to-day basis.  A senior data privacy lawyer with relevant regional experience and effective communication skills is needed as a key subject-matter expert within the ASEAN General Counsel’s Office providing advice to the General Counsels in the Region with particular support to the Singapore General Counsel’s Office.


This is a truly regional role in a dynamic and growing business. The Asean Data Protection Counsel will report directly to the ASEAN General Counsel and will be based in Singapore. The ASEAN Data Protection Counsel will be part of a high performing and growing team of counsels in the region and also be part of the data protection team sitting within the Global General Counsel’s office working with a team of highly experienced data privacy lawyers with opportunities to interact with EY’s Global Lead Counsel for Data Privacy & Security / EY Global Data Protection Leader.


Your key responsibilities


As the ASEAN Data Protection Counsel you will be responsible for being the lead legal advisor on all aspects of data protection and the governance and implementation of EY’s data protection compliance framework across ASEAN in partnership with Risk Management, IT, and other key stakeholder organizations.


As part of your responsibilities, you will:

  • Provide first-in-class advice to the organization on applicable data protection legislation including overseeing and identifying legal and regulatory risks surrounding data protection issues in ASEAN and devising and implementing solutions and strategies to mitigate such risks;
  • Mentor and coach counsel and risk management personnel in ASEAN with an interest in data protection;  
  • Provide counsel and oversight on the data breach incident management process and work alongside other EY leaders to assess whether breaches must be notified;
  • Escalate to the ASEAN General Counsel, Country General Counsels and the ASEAN Risk Management Leader any significant compliance issues and plans for their resolution, as well as implications relating to local data protection regulations applicable in ASEAN.


Skills and attributes for success


We are seeking a strong data protection and privacy lawyer who enjoys leadership and oversight of a data protection program, working closely with stakeholders and their operating business while contributing as part of the ASEAN legal team.


To qualify for the role you must have:


  • A practicing certificate (or equivalent membership) of a relevant bar association or equivalent;
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant post-qualification experience in a legal role with in-house experience (either in an in-house position or through client secondment);
  • Expert knowledge in EU, UK and Singapore data protection legislation and ideally familiarization with the ASEAN data protection landscape;
  • Strong contract negotiation skills with experience in negotiating data protection agreements and cybersecurity schedules;
  • Ability to provide clear, concise and commercially strategic advice to senior business leaders of the organization.
  • Proven experience in the field of data protection and the implementation of a privacy compliance program such as the drafting of policies, privacy notices, conducting PIAs, dealing with data breaches etc.;
  • Strong leadership and project management skills; and
  • Excellent command of the English language (spoken and written);


Ideally, you’ll also have


  • An internationally recognized privacy certification, such as CIPP/E and CIPM;
  • Significant experience working across borders
  • A technology background and an understanding of information and cyber security
